Media Studies Department Media Studies is a stimulating, creative subject that helps students to develop skills and attitudes that are valuable for employment in any career. Through its study, students develop analytical, research and practical production skills and this course offers an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers in media industries such as advertising, journalism, graphic design, film, television and radio production, marketing and promotion or for those who wish to pursue further study. The Media Studies department has three full-time members of staff:
The department is well resourced in terms of materials and practical equipment. Facilities include: ICT – 20 Emac computers and 1 IMac computer with Photoshop and IMovie software, 2 A4 scanners and 3 A4 printers. Each classroom is fitted with an interactive whiteboard and has access to the internet and C2K. Digital photography and video – 4 digital cameras and 3 digital video cameras. During year 13, pupils study units 1 and 2 of the WJEC GCE Media Studies Revised Specification (see www.wjec.co.uk ) as follows: MS1: Media Representations and Responses - pupils study how media products are constructed and how audiences respond to and interpret them and must answer three compulsory questions based on unseen audio-visual or print-based material. The exam lasts for two and a half hours. MS2: Media Production Processes – pupils must demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in media production processes through research, planning, production and evaluation and must submit a portfolio of three components – one pre-production; one production and one evaluative report on the production process. A2 Level During year 14, pupils study units 3 and 4 of the WJEC Media Studies Revised Specification as follows: MS3: Media Investigation and Production - pupils undertake a research investigation and submit a media production and evaluative report based on their research findings. MS4: Text, Industry and Audience – pupils study three media industries in depth, developing their knowledge and understanding of the relationship between media products, their audiences and the industries which produce and distribute them. They must answer three questions, each on a different media industry and the exam lasts for two and a half hours. Results AS Level
