There were two significant rugby matches over the half term break. The medallion travelled to Portora in Enniskillen on the first weekend to play the quarter final of the Medallion Shield. Portora is never an easy place to travel to as the team learned in January when they had a narrow win down there. However on this occasion our boys were well prepared and played a near perfect match to finish resounding 39-0 winners. Portora had only lost twice this season both to RBAI! The win sets up a semi final with Sullivan this Saturday at Campbell kicking off at 10.30am.
On Saturday past the 1st XV played Royal School Armagh in the Quarter Final of the Schools' Cup at Osborne and finished comfortable winners 23-0. The team implemented their pre planned tactics perfectly in the first half and continued their domination of territory into the second half. Captain Lewis McNamara scored first and Ethan Harbinson and ben McGavock both scored in the second half. The win sets up a semi final with Coleraine Inst on Tuesday March 3rd at Kingspan Stadium (Ravenhill).
In the 2XV Cup after a resounding win over Limavady we have drawn away to Dromore. This is scheduled for Wednesday March 4th. This competition is always a difficult one to fit in fixtures to not affect the 1st XV but as we feel we have a good depth of players we are optimistic in this competition.
In the 3rd XV Cup the 3rd Xv, 4th XV and 5th XV are all still alive. The 3rds are away to Sullivan and 5ths at home to MCB 3XV on Saturday 28/2 and the 4th XV are away to Down 3rds on Wednesday 25/2.
In the junior school the under 14 squad have been the big improvers under Mr Sheppard. They are unbeaten since losing to MCB at Halloween. The under 13 have stood out all year as one of the leading sides in Ulster at their age. They are playing an exceptional brand of rugby and are a fabulous group to work with as they are hardworking and willing to learn.
The under 12 squad have had some mixed results. They have been up and down with their performances however when they have played well they have been excellent. Gaining some more consistency is their target.
Preparations for the NZ2017 tour are well under way and fundraising activities are due to kick start over the next few weeks. The current under 13 and 14 squads are the applicants and given the form they are displaying now the extra motivation of tour should ensure continued improvement.
