He may have been visiting his Alma Mater but there is nothing ‘old school’ about Peter Barron! The Vice President of Communications for Google in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and former editor of BBC Newsnight, returned to RBAI on Thursday to address a group of 100 local business leaders and pupils on the Changing World of Media and Technology.
During his address, Peter emphasised the importance of integrating technology into education if we want our young people to compete in the global marketplace.
“It’s exciting to see the growth in the number of tech start-ups and global technology companies basing themselves in Northern Ireland. It’s crucial for the economy that we prepare the next generation for the great opportunities that exist, and I’m delighted to see that my old school, RBAI, is embracing technology and preparing young people to take the sector forward.”
The Principal, who was Northern Ireland President of ASCL (the Association of School and College Leaders) last year, took the opportunity to highlight the fact that schools and employers need to work closely together.
“The rise in high quality IT related jobs and opportunities in Northern Ireland makes it is essential to align the needs of employers and Higher Education with our curriculum and careers guidance, ensuring our young people develop the skills sets for the future.”
The event was organised by the Development & Alumni Relations Office, and pictures from the event are available on the BOIA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/boia.org.uk
