It has taken many years of trying but finally RBAI 1st XI have won the prestigious Belfast U18 League title. Finishing off the season with a 2-2 draw against Boys Model and defeating Grosvenor Grammar 6-0, the Inst boys leapfrogged an excellent La Salle side to finish in first place.
More recognised for rugby, Inst footballers have been quietly improving over the last few seasons and this year there was a different mood in the squad. Not to be outdone by other sports in school, this special group of players became the first ever Inst football team to win a trophy.
Coaches Titterington and Gray were delighted with the progress of the boys and even more pleasing is that the majority of this squad are in Year 12 and Year 13 and will therefore be back in yellow and black next year to try to retain the trophy.
Everyone associated with RBAI would like to take this opportunity to wish Mr McKinstry a very long an enjoyable retirement. He spent many of his 37 years in Inst promoting football and founded RBAI FC. There couldn’t be a more fitting send off than bringing the league trophy to Inst in his final year.
Mr McKinstry has kindly agreed to return to RBAI in September to present the trophy, player’s medals and the annual player awards during a whole school assembly.
