RBAI is a member of the South Belfast Area Learning Community (SBALC). SBALC is made up of 11 Post Primary schools, and also includes Belfast Metropolitan College. Whilst the community recognises the autonomy and ethos of the individual schools, the member schools and BMC work in partnership to implement a curriculum that will better meet the needs of pupils. Being a member of SBALC allows pupils at RBAI to access a wider choice of academic, applied and vocational courses – although it should be noted that we already offer 29 examination based subjects at GCSE level and 26 subjects at ‘A’ level. For geographical reasons, collaboration mainly occurs with Methodist College and Victoria College. Examples of subjects which can be studied through collaboration with these schools include:

  • Archaeology
  • Classical Civilisation
  • Drama & Theatre Studies
  • Electronics
  • Moving Image Arts
  • Psychology

We also endeavour to collaborate with another school where the Sixth Form Option Blocks do not allow pupils at RBAI to study a certain combination of subjects, although these instances are rare.

RBAI is also collaborating with Belfast Metropolitan College (Millfield Campus) in the delivery of the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering, a qualification that is equivalent to one ‘A’ level. Along with their other ‘A’ level subjects, pupils at RBAI study at the BMC for two afternoons a week. As we have aligned one of our Options Blocks with the BMC, this collaboration means that there is no disruption to the rest of a pupil’s timetable.
