Following in the Footsteps of Longley and Mahon
RBAI pupils, Solomon Trimble and Matthew McKay recently attended the launch of an anthology of new writing from Northern Ireland: On the Grass When I Arrive edited by Dr Leon Litvack from QUB. The theme of the anthology is sense of place and of belonging. To illustrate this, Dr Litvack invited 39 writers to contribute, including Solomon and Matthew. Their writing now sits side by side with the work of established poets like Ciaran Carson, Medbh McGuckian and Laura Cameron.
Matthew and Solomon were two of the talented junior school pupils who inspired Mrs McCord to establish a Junior Creative Writing Club in 2014. The club got involved in a number of key creative writing projects in collaboration with Young at Art/ Crescent Arts and Staging 2016: Linen Hall Library. Journalist and writer Sharon Dempsey, who was in charge of the writing projects quickly spotted the potential of the two Inst. pupils and showed their writing to Dr Litvack who was equally impressed.
The launch of the anthology took place at No Alibis bookshop on Botanic Avenue. Not only were Solomon and Matthew asked to read at the launch by Dr Litvack, they also had to sign copies of the book. They are now looking forward to the royalties!
On the Grass When I Arrive is published by the Guildhall Press £9.99.
