It has been an extremely busy end to the season for the members of the RBAI Hockey Club. The 1st was narrowly beaten by Campbell College (1-0), in the final of the Burney Plate competition on Wednesday 22nd March, whilst the Under 15’s made it through to the semi-final of the Richardson Cup before losing out to Regent House by one goal to nil. In making it through to the semi-final the Under 15’s had recorded an excellent 2-1 win away at Cookstown H.S. in the quarter-final of the competition. The 2nd XI also made its way through to the semi-final of their competition, the Dowdall Cup. Having defeated Bangor G.S. by two goals to nil in the quarter-final, the 2nd’s lost by the same score line to a strong Banbridge Academy 2nd XI in the semi-final.
In terms of representative hockey, congratulations go to Jack Oakman and Finlay Marney (both Year 11), and Harry McNellis (Year 12), who have been selected to play for the Ulster Under 17 team in a series of matches against the England U17 team at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. In addition, Jack Oakman has recently been selected to play for the Irish Under 16 team that will travel to Holland in mid-April to play a series of matches against the Dutch Under 16’s and the visiting Canadian Under 16’s.
Finally, congratulations to Year 10 pupils Josh Cree, Patrick McColl, Stephen McDougall, Scott Heatherington and Theo Fitch who have made it through to the final stage of the Ulster Hockey Under 16 talent identification process. Best of luck to all four pupils as they attempt to gain selection (at the end of April 2017), to the Ulster Under 16 training squad for the 2017-2018 season.
