Huge thanks to Courtney Lewis (Inchmarlo 1988-95 & RBAI 1995-2002) for sponsoring sixth formers Josh Cargill and Robbie Marrs to spend a week with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the David Geffen Hall, New York, during easter.

Robbie & Josh, who both have ambitions to become professional musicians, watched rehearsals, benefitted from one-to-one tuition, and had an opportunity to meet the CEO and other key business functions, gaining incredible insight into how a professional orchestra functions.

The boys were joined on the study visit by RBAI’s Head of Music Philip Bolton, who reflected;

‘This was a remarkable opportunity for both boys. Watching rehearsals from close quarters and meeting the musicians gave Josh and Robbie an insight into the technical standard and commitment required to succeed in a professional orchestra. The boys will gain great confidence from this time, and it will help them immeasurably in their development.’

Clarinetist Robbie Marrs, who is planning to study music after completing his A’ levels in June commented;

‘The attention to detail Courtney and the Orchestra apply to their music is amazing. We’re so grateful to Courtney for this opportunity, and giving up so much of his time whilst preparing for key performances.’

Courtney, who gained first class honours in Music at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, after leaving RBAI, is currently the Music Director of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. He is much in demand, having worked with 4 different orchestras, conducting 44 concerts around the world over this past year.
