Year 11 Digital Masterclass 2017

RBAI once again hosted the annual Year 11 Young Enterprise Masterclass which is a joint event with Victoria College. This year it was a Digital Masterclass with a focus on the fast growing digital industry. At the beginning of the event, pupils were challenged to think about how technology has moved life on – no more encyclopaedia searching for a school project, no more waiting for a film to be developed before you can see your photos and no more only being able to use a phone in the house. Video clips helped to illustrate just how much technology is impacting on everyday life and how apps are having a major influence on how we live. The main challenge of the day was to put together a business plan for a new smartphone app and this activity gave pupils an opportunity to develop their skills of teamwork, communication and creativity. On both days pupils were also supported by two local digital business entrepreneurs who told their stories of setting up a business in the digital industry.

Ideas were then presented using ipads and the winner of the best idea on day 1 was Key Print – an app that lets you into your house using your finger print if you have lost your keys. Best presentation went to “Track your granny” – an app for checking up on the whereabouts of your granny! I’m not sure the pupils thought through that it could also be used to track them!

Thanks to Young Enterprise for delivering this event and for giving our pupils encouragement regarding their future careers.
