Celebrating Success in English and Literature 2017

This year’s Celebrating Success in English and Literature afternoon was again a wonderful occasion; congratulations to all those boys from the junior school who won prizes during Thursday’s ceremony. The pupils enjoyed welcoming parents and relations to Christchurch and there were so many successes students to celebrate!

First place in this year’s Accelerated Reader – Readers of the Year competition was Jack Hollway, 8K, who read over four million words; this is an exceptional achievement and the school is extremely proud of Jack, along with all those boys whose commitment was rewarded. Dan Kernohan, 8P, was a worthy second place having read well over three million words while both Ben Henry, 8K, and Callum Bennett, 9P, both read over three million words. Seven boys from the Junior School read over two million words with forty-four students reading over one million words. Daniel McCormick 8S Jack Hammond 8K and Dylan Marks 8J were the Most Improved Readers in Year 8 while Ross Johnston 9K, Joshua Noble 9D, Mikolaj Szybka 9P topped the Year 9 category. Finn Anthelme Walsh of 8J won a special creative writing prize.

The success of our students and the enjoyment they clearly take in reading was flagged up once again by Miss Williamson as she presented the prizes. At a time when the media remains keen to present boys as poor readers with low levels of engagement and literacy, the number of students who have been inspired to read in our school is extremely encouraging.

Special mention must be made of Mrs Lindsay and Mrs Halley the librarians who work extremely hard to identify books our students will enjoy and invent initiatives to sustain the boys’ interest. Our library is a haven for many pupils due to the librarians’ hard work. Thank you also top Dr Bailie, our new Head of English and Drama, whose passion for her subject has already been communicated to the boys, their parents and the staff; she made Thursday a unique and enjoyable event. Congratulations to all those who won prizes on the day.
