Four teams competed in the Ulster Schools’ Cup and League Finals on Friday 9 March. Firstly, congratulations to the Year 8 team of John Shaw, Lorcan Donnelly, Matthew Mooney and Scott McElhinney who played Wallace High School in the final of the Cup, which they drew 3-3 in games, winning by 8-6 on countback to sets, to claim the Ulster Schools’ title.Well done also to the Minor team of Dan Smith, Ben Gray, James Dick and Darcy Hogg who played in the Division 2 League final, losing 2-4 to Wallace in a very closely contested game and finishing as runners up in the competition.
Congratulations to the Junior B team of Ben Callaghan, Hugo Wong, Stuart Campbell and Ronan McFadden who competed in the final of the Junior Division 2 competition, which they drew 3-3 in games against Coleraine Grammar, losing by 8-6 on countback to sets to finish as runners up in the League competition.
Finally, many congratulations to the Junior A team of Jack Livingstone, Matthew Cheung, Josh Armstrong and Ethan Hance who played Royal and Prior in the Ulster Schools’ Cup Final, claiming a decisive 6-0 victory and in the Division 1 League Final which they also won by 6-0 to finish as Junior League and Cup champions, qualifying them for the Irish Championships in Dublin. The team represented Ulster at the Irish Finals on 21 March, where they competed in the U16 Division 1 tournament, playing teams from Connacht, Leinster and Munster. They defeated both Blackwater School, Waterford and St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny convincingly by 6-0 and played a very closely contested game against Roscommon College, winning their final set by 30 points to 29 in a nail-biting finish to claim the match by 4-2 and win the Irish U16 Championship, which is a fantastic achievement. Many congratulations to the team on their remarkable season and outstanding success as top U16 boys’ badminton team in Ireland for 2 years in a row!
