Past and present pupils leave their mark on the world hockey stage

A large number of RBAI hockey players (both past and present) have recently been achieving considerable success when it comes to representative hockey.

Pride of place must go to Mark Gleghorne (pictured) who was a member of the England team that recently finished fourth in the Hockey World Cup (June 2014.) Mark scored two goals in the tournament (one against India and one against Malaysia) which took place in The Hague in the Netherlands. The English team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal having lost to Argentina in the 3rd/4th play-off. Mark attended RBAI as a pupil between 1996 and 2003.

John Jackson (RBAI : 2003-2005) , Mikie Watt (1998-2005) and Paul Gleghorne (1998-2005) have all recently been named in the Irish men’s team that will play Wales in a series of matches in Dublin on the 28th and the 29th June. All three have been regular members of the Irish team in recent seasons.

In addition James Lorimer (the school 1st XI captain in the 2013-2014 season) and Ben McMillan (RBAI : 2004-2011) will be playing for the Irish Under 21 squad as it prepares for the European Championships which take place in Portugal from the 13th-19th July, 2014.

Jonny Beckett and Spencer Pinion (both members of Year 11 in the school) have also achieved considerable success in recent weeks. Jonny has been named in the Irish Under 16 squad that plays a series of matches against Wales (in Wrexham) from the 4th-6th July 2014, whilst Spencer recently travelled to Largs in Scotland to play for the Ulster Under 16 squad in a series of matches against Scotland. The Ulster team recorded three convincing wins : 4-1 ; 8-0, and 4-1.

Many congratulations to all the RBAI pupils concerned : both past and present.
