Fencing

The Fencing Club is held on Wednesday afternoons from 3.25pm to 5.00pm in the gym.  Boys from any year group are welcome to attend.  The club is coached by Katie Arup who is a past Olympian from the British Olympic Fencing Team.  Many fencers compete in the N.I. Junior Foil Series which consists of 5 rounds held over the months from November to April.  This year, in the Under 12 age category Matthew McKay finished in 1st place overall and therefore is the Under 12 NI Junior Foil Series Champion.  In the Under 14 age category Aneurin Duffin- Murray also finished in 1st place and so is the Under 14 NI Junior Foil Series Champion.  In the Under 16 age category Daragh Patterson finished in 3rd place and Theo Millar finished in 1st place, meaning that he is the Under 16 NI Junior Foil Series Champion.  Matthew, Aneurin, Daragh, Theo and Paul Verdon all qualified for the British Youth Championships which were held in Sheffield in May.  Fencers in Year 9 and above can enter the Public Schools Fencing Championships which are held each year at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London.

In the Boys’ Mount-Haes Foil we were extremely proud to have Matthew McKay gaining 10th place and Noah Brown achieving 14th place out of a total of 118 boys in the tournament. Rowan Luney and Ross Chambers also fenced well in this category.

In the Junior Boys’ Foil tournament (107 entrants) we had three boys who fenced, Michael Thompson, Nkosinathi Khumalo and Callum Watson.

Overall, it was a successful trip and the boys also had time to visit the National History Museum.

Fencing Competition Success

Matthew McKay from year 10 had great success when he travelled down to Dublin for an all Ireland fencing competition in October. Despite being one of the younger boys at 13 in an under 15 category, Matthew fenced off strong opposition to bring home a bronze medal.

Fencing Round One : NIJFS

This weekend’s Northern Ireland Junior Foil Series event took place at Hunter House on Sunday 8th Nov. It was the first competition of the 2015/16 season and RBAI fencing club was represented by a strong group of 15 fencers from yr8 - yr12. We had medal successes with Michael Thompson winning the U16 Gold: A great win for Michael who fenced at his very best throughout the day. He won all of his fights in the early seeding round and continued to make light work of all of his matches through to the final where he won 9/8 on time. Matthew McKay gained a Silver medal place in the U14: Yet another top result for Matthew who consistently medals at NI and Irish events. Matthew works hard, making the most of his strength and concentration to outperform his opponents. A special mention must be given to the novice fencers from yr 8 who stepped up to the challenge of their first open competition. They fenced with guts, supported each other admirably and showed their potential to hopefully be champions of the future. Well done to all the RBAI fencers. Next NIJFS will be on Sunday Dec 6th in Holywood Queen’s Leisure Centre.
